Baby News...

I trudged into my doctors appointment yesterday, already knowing how the visit would go.

Doctor would listen to Baby's heartbeat, measure the belly, ask if I was feeling any contractions (Nope), check my progress (None) and send me on my merry way. That's when I usually go home, pull out the half gallon of cookie dough ice cream and sulk.

It's become somewhat of a weekly tradition.

This week, however, the usual routine suffered a major disturbance. I first noticed the deviation when my doctor took a bit longer to measure the belly. I knew something was really off when she actually furrowed her brow and whispered "Huh" under her breath. Nothing gets past these pregnant ears.

"Baby is measuring smaller than I would like," she said to the nearly panicked pregnant woman on the table before her. "Let's get you in for an ultrasound, just to make sure everything is okay."

At least that's what I'm told she said. What I heard was something more akin to this:

"START PANICKING. THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH YOUR BABY."

We headed downstairs to the creepy ultrasound lab, where we had to wait for nearly an hour to be seen. Over the course of that hour, my mind zoomed through all the different things that could possibly go wrong at this stage in pregnancy.

I knew it was all too easy. I should have prepared myself for something like this. I will NOT cry in front of all the other women surrounding me.

When our turn finally came, I pulled up the shirt and let the doctor take over. At 39 weeks, the baby is much too big to see anything resembling an actual baby. I had to trust the doctor to identify what blob was what. No cute profile with baby sucking her thumb this time.

Let's get to the point of this rambling. Baby is measuring more like 37 weeks, instead of 39. She only weighs about 5 pounds at this point, which is NOT good for a kid who's due date is less than a week away.

The good news is she's still active and healthy. Whenever the ultrasound doctor pushed against my belly, Baby pushed right back.

The bad news is, she's really little and needs to put on some more weight before I can hold her.

It looks like August 4th has become just another insignificant date in the lives of the Ivins family.

August 11 has become the new deadline.

THEREFORE... I have to wait an extra week to finally smooch my kid. But honestly, I would rather smooch a chubby baby than a skinny mini one.

Suddenly going overdue doesn't seem so bad. And let's face it, who wouldn't want an extra week of sleep?

welcome to the overdue club. not that there is an actual CLUB, but yeah. it's fun! right??!

yes. think of it that way. extra sleep! more couple time! extra foot rubs and all the ice cream your little heart desires.

i'm so glad she's okay, and can't wait to see this hopefully chubby baby. :)

also, and i don't know if it helps or hurts, but i've heard a million stories about doctors and their weight guestimates being like, entire POUNDS off. so hopefully she's a bit off and baby is a bit bigger. :)

anyway. thems are my thoughts. and now back to your foot rub.

I dont know if your baby ticker has always been blue, but I thought it used to be pink and your news was that they found that it was a boy!!! NOW that would have been crazy. Good Luck, and trust me you will want that extra week of sleep;)

Um, why did it take the doctors until NOW to figure this out?! You are taking this all remarkably well, my dear. I agree, chubby babies are great, so keep on keepin' on with that cookie dough ice cream.

And in my opinion, she will come whenever she darn well feels like it, whether that's a week away or two.
